I was digging through old stuff I had from when I moved to Bradds and I found some old cd’s. I found one I haven’t listened to in forever. “Take me to your leader” by the Newsboys.  I loved this cd when I first purchased it in 1996 and I knew I would enjoy it just as much today so I looked it up on Apple Music and began listening to the old familiar songs. I was surprised to discover even after more than 23 years I still have the songs memorized.

One of the songs “Breathe” has been playing on a repeat track in my mind today and I find myself singing the words as I go throughout the day. This song is not a complicated lyrical song, the chorus simply says:

Breathe on me

Breathe oh Breath of God

Breathe on me

`til my heart is new

Breathe on me

Breathe oh Breath of Life

Breathe on me

`til I love like You do

The rest of the song makes me laugh its talking about a “people person” who is fed up with people and he just wants everyone to avoid him. But with each of his crazy journal entries in the verses, he simply sings the chorus listed above and it’s a beautiful prayer to the Father to breathe His spirit and make the heart new and refreshed.

I love the scripture “Create in me a clean heart oh God and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10

A lot of times we think this is asking for a heart free from sin; a heart clean in the eyes of God and I believe we miss His intention and that is a heart free from the gunk that often gets built up inside of us as a result of living in the world. Think about the next half of the verse, it says renew a right spirit within me, this implies we have previously let Him make us new and we need to spend some time in His presence asking Him to “do again” that which enables us to “love like He does.”

In singing the chorus of the song I mentioned above, I am praying for the breath of God to breathe on me and make me new.

My dear friend sent me a text with the scripture “Because of the LORD’s great love, we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”  Lamentations 3:22-23.

I love God's timing.  His faithfulness is new every morning.  I think I will go spend some time in His presence and sing.
